Principles Programs

For Elliott School Students Requiring a Full Introductory Course

Several Elliott school Master's programs require incoming students to have taken an introductory Microeconomics and Macroeconomics course prior to matriculation. IIEP is pleased to offer summer online versions of these courses that fulfill the Elliott School requirement. Students may complete either:

  • The combined Microeconomics and Macroeconomics Principles program
  • A standalone Microeconomics Principles course
  • A standalone Macroeconomics Principles course

Successful completion of the required coursework satisfies the Elliott School’s prerequisite requirement. These programs do not carry academic credit for external institutions.

Course format: All courses include pre-recorded lectures, four weekly graded homework assignments, and quizzes. An instructor holds weekly online office hours to answer questions and provide academic support and is responsible for grading assignments and assessments. A detailed list of topics is available for Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. The recommended textbook is Greg Mankiw’s Principles of Economics 7th Edition (older editions will suffice).

Students who have already taken economics in the past should take the assessment exam available here and then consider participating in the self-guided and self-paced online review programs available here.

Microeconomics and Macroeconomics Combined Sessions ($1,300)

The program consists of two consecutive sessions that run from May 18 until August 7:

  • Session I (Microeconomics) — May 18 to June 26
  • Session II (Macroeconomics) — June 29 to August 7

Successful completion of both sessions satisfies the Elliott School’s minimum economics prerequisite requirement for students with no prior introductory economics background. To meet the prerequisite, participants must earn at least 70% of the total possible points in each session. Participants who do not meet this threshold in one or both sessions will be required to take a final written exam in the corresponding subject area(s) (Micro, Macro, or both) on August 11, 2026.

The total cost for the combined program is $1,300.
